Diversity

I developed critical thinking abilities and a foundation of ethical understanding that will allow me to serve people of diverse ethnic, cultural, gender, and other backgrounds.  Many courses support me in learning about this but two that stood out were my Islam class and World History.

My Islam class was a very informative and interesting course as I was able to learn so much about the people, culture, traditions, and understand the religion so much more.  Especially living in the bay area, we are able to experience and be  surrounded by such diversity.  There are often many times we may not understand or think people are different, yet we should be looking at it as a uniqueness and we are able to want to learn more about each other rather than push each other way only because of what we don't know yet.

Taking a religion course really gives you a better chance to comprehend and take in the cultural aspects.  This gave me a chance to know some of my friends and even students better as I was able to get a glimpse of their perspectives.  I have more respect for Muslims and have a better understanding of their beliefs.  Most of the time we tend to veer away from things that are unknown to us, but this can give us a chance to accept and be more mindful of where we all come from, how we were raised, and an opportunity to get to know each other more.

In my World History class, it seemed like it was the best timing to be in one as there are so many current events that has been happening and even some repeating itself as we speak.  I love history as its a way to visualize and understand the past to the present which leads to the future.  I like knowing about those who were here before us and especially the changes that happened throughout history.  Growing up, history was the best stories you can tell, read, and learn from as I was always interested in what happened in the past that appear in the present and altered the future.  Its intriguing to figure out how historians are able to record all the data or analyze things to find specific dates.  I feel that history gives you a better perspective on time and how people shaped, adapted, and created this world we live in now.

I'm tributing this post to my family who paved the way for generations to come.  I'm grateful and blessed to be here as it was thanks to them that our families grew and were given the opportunity to strive for more in life.  Being a first generation born in America meant a lot as it was a new line of our family that were being raised here and remember those who were here before us to continue working hard for our family.  I am appreciative for having such a big and loving family as we have stories to tell for a lifetime.  This is why history to me is something that I am passionate about.  To remember the past, keep them in the present, and tell stories in the future. :)
